Young Actors Studio

Directed by Alan Palmer

A one-to-two year intensive training course designed for young actors, 15-18 years of age. The course will be offered for three terms at two levels, according to the student's age and experience.

Level 1

  • Development of basic voal technique
  • Movement and physical theatre
  • Devised theatre
  • Improvisation
  • Study and performance of classical Shakespearean and contemporary texts
  • Screen acting technique

Level 2

  • Relaxation and creative movement
  • Vocal technique and breath control
  • Stage skills - fighting and stage management
  • Short film and personal show reels
  • Comedy and stand-up
  • Public Performance

At the conclusion of the third term, those students who have met the requirements of the course will be eligible for the WPAC Young Actors Studio Certificate - Level 1 or Level 2

Class will be held twice a week at the Wellington Performing Arts Centre: 4:15 - 5:45
Year 1 - Monday & Wednesday
Year 2 - Tuesday & Thursday
When working on productions students will also be required to rehearse on weekends.

Three terms of intensive training:

Term One (10 Weeks)

11 February - 18 April

Term Two (9 Weeks)

5 May - 4 July

Term Three (10 Weeks)

21 July - 26 September

Auditions will be held on Saturday 2 February 2008 starting at 10am

Admission is by audition only. Candidates should prepare a 2-3 minute monologue to present to the panel. There will also be a short interview with the panel and a class improvisation and theatre skills.

Alan Palmer

Alan trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. He has an MA in perfoming arts from Chales Sturt University in NSW. He has worked for more than 25 years as an actor on stage, screen and TV mainly in the UK but also in NZ.

He is a former director of Forum North and founding director of Northland Youth Theatre. He was programme Manager for the Arts at Northland Polytechnic until April 2002. Alan currently teaches on the tertiary programme at WPAC.

He moved to Wellington with his family in April 2007. Alan currently teaches at WPAC

Fees

(GST inclusive, non-refundable and payable in advance)

$260 per 10-week term
$235 per 9-week term
