Contemporary DANCE
As the name suggests, contemporary dance is an art form of today – the 21st Century - that is challenging, risk-taking, experimental and demanding of audiences. The primary tools of contemporary dance are the body, time and space and choreographers often introduce a personal aesthetic into their creations. In theatrical terms there is a close correlation between contemporary dance and “physical” theatre and there is almost always an element of improvisation in the making of the work, with much of the creative input being contributed by the dancers themselves.
Adult Contemporary Technique – Beginners
The class starts with warm-ups - both on the floor and in standing position - designed to promote postural alignment, body awareness, flexibility of the spine and joints, balance and strength. Locomotion movements across the floor that utilise walking, running and jumping steps get the body moving through space and then basic free movements, leaps, turns, twists, falls and jumps are combined into simple routines that encourage exploration of dynamic, working with breath and the ability to use gravity when dancing.
Adult Contemporary Technique – Open
Designed for dancers with a good working knowledge of Contemporary Dance technique, the emphasis is on developing strength, flexibility, correct placement, body articulation and breathing techniques in order to gain optimum control of the body when moving. Movement phrases that explore different aspects of contemporary technique, including release technique, weight (fall, rebound, recovery and suspension) and musicality will develop into challenging and full-bodied routines that challenge and extend dancers on every level.
